Basic Channel

Basic Channel is the foundational Berlin-based duo of Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, whose stripped-down, dub-infused techno defined a new era of electronic music in the early 1990s. With just a handful of releases, they reshaped the sonic landscape—pairing deep, hypnotic rhythms with delay-drenched textures, subtle distortion, and minimalist aesthetics.

Launched in 1993, the Basic Channel label introduced a signature visual and sonic identity: unlabelled black vinyl, cryptic catalogue codes, and music that felt both industrial and meditative. Tracks like “Phylyps Trak” and “Quadrant Dub” became cult classics, not through mainstream exposure, but through whispered reverence in underground circles.

Their influence extended well beyond their core output. The duo developed a network of labels—Chain Reaction, Main Street, Rhythm & Sound—each exploring different facets of minimalism, dub, and sound system culture. Together, these projects helped establish Berlin as a global centre of techno and left an enduring mark on electronic music worldwide.
