Ragga Hip Hop

Ragga hip hop is a hybrid subgenre that fuses the rhythmic intensity and vocal style of ragga (or dancehall) with the beats, structure, and attitude of hip hop. Originating in the late 1980s and 1990s, it features toasting or patois-inflected vocals over boom bap, dancehall, or digital beats, often blending reggae basslines with hip hop percussion. This fusion reflects cultural crossovers between Caribbean sound system traditions and urban hip hop scenes, particularly in the UK, US, and parts of Europe. Ragga hip hop brings high energy, lyrical fire, and a raw, streetwise sound rooted in both resistance and celebration.
