Underground Resistance

Underground Resistance (UR) is both a fiercely independent Detroit techno label and a collective of artists founded in the late 1980s by Jeff Mills, “Mad” Mike Banks, and Robert Hood. More than just a label, UR represents a movement—one rooted in sonic resistance, Afrofuturism, and a refusal to conform to mainstream industry norms. With a militant aesthetic and politically charged ethos, UR became synonymous with Detroit’s second wave of techno, emphasizing empowerment through sound and self-reliance.

On many UR releases, the artist credit is simply listed as Underground Resistance rather than naming individuals, reinforcing the idea of a collective identity over personal fame. However, it’s widely believed that a significant portion of the music released under the UR name—especially in the post-Mills and Hood era—was produced by co-founder Mad Mike Banks, a pivotal figure whose jazz-infused, emotionally driven techno helped shape the label’s sound.

From raw, industrial electro to deep, spiritual techno, UR’s catalog is diverse yet unmistakable, with early releases like Riot, The Final Frontier, and Galaxy 2 Galaxy becoming anthems of resistance on dancefloors worldwide. Today, the label remains a powerful symbol of underground culture and artistic autonomy.
