Wavejumpers

Wavejumpers is a contemporary electro project deeply rooted in the legacy of Detroit’s Drexciya, the influential duo of James Stinson and Gerald Donald. Emerging in 2022, Wavejumpers continues the aquatic Afrofuturist mythology that Drexciya pioneered, blending immersive storytelling with cutting-edge electronic music.

Their debut release, The Sunken Treasure EP, issued on Underground Resistance (UR-097), features tracks like “The Sound,” “Aquatic Justice,” and “Decoding the Maps.” These compositions evoke the submerged worlds and speculative narratives central to Drexciya’s work, characterized by deep, aqueous synth lines and intricate rhythms.

Notably, Wavejumpers includes Tyree Stinson, James Stinson’s brother, linking the project directly to Drexciya’s lineage. This familial connection reinforces the project’s authenticity and commitment to preserving and expanding upon the original Drexciyan vision.

In Drexciya’s mythology, “Wavejumpers” are depicted as elite warriors within the underwater civilization, embodying strength and resistance. By adopting this moniker, the Wavejumpers project positions itself as a continuation of this narrative, exploring themes of identity, heritage, and futuristic resilience through music.

Through Wavejumpers, the enduring influence of Drexciya’s Afrofuturist concepts persists, offering listeners a modern interpretation of the deep-sea sonic explorations that have captivated audiences for decades.
