Madvillain

Madvillain is the legendary collaboration between rapper MF DOOM (Daniel Dumile) and producer Madlib (Otis Jackson Jr.), formed in the early 2000s and signed to Stones Throw Records. Their one and only studio album, Madvillainy (2004), is widely considered a landmark in underground hip-hop — a densely layered, abstract, and experimental project that challenged conventional rap structures and aesthetics.

Madlib handled all production, drawing from a kaleidoscope of jazz, soul, and obscure film samples, while MF DOOM delivered his signature stream-of-consciousness wordplay, packed with comic book references, coded slang, and sharp wit. The album’s fragmented structure — with many tracks under two minutes — broke with traditional formats and helped define the “loop-based” style that would become influential in instrumental hip-hop and beat scene circles.

Despite its minimal commercial push, Madvillainy became an instant cult classic and earned critical acclaim for its innovation, originality, and chemistry between the two artists. It influenced a generation of producers and emcees, and remains one of the most respected records in the Stones Throw catalogue.
