The Martian

The Martian is a seminal and enigmatic figure in Detroit techno, widely believed to be an alias of Mike Banks, co-founder of Underground Resistance (UR). Operating through the Red Planet label, The Martian’s work is characterized by its fusion of deep, space-themed techno with elements of funk, jazz, and indigenous rhythms.

Debuting in 1992 with the release Meet The Red Planet, The Martian introduced a sound that was both futuristic and rooted in Detroit’s rich musical heritage. Tracks like “Lost Transmission From Earth” and “The Intruder” exemplify this blend, offering listeners a journey through cosmic landscapes and rhythmic complexity.

Subsequent releases, including Cosmic Movement, Sex In Zero Gravity, and Journey To The Martian Polar Cap, continued to expand this sonic universe. The 1999 compilation LBH – 6251876 (A Red Planet Compilation) serves as a comprehensive collection of The Martian’s work, encapsulating the project’s evolution and its impact on the techno genre.
