Japanese Telecom

Japanese Telecom is the elusive solo project of Gerald Donald, best known as one half of Drexciya. Emerging at the turn of the millennium, Japanese Telecom channels Donald’s fascination with science, technology, and futurism into razor-sharp electro rooted in both Detroit’s machine funk and a fictionalised vision of Japan’s high-tech culture. Tracks under this alias are sleek, minimal, and rhythmically precise, often evoking retro-futurist imagery of satellites, cybernetics, and telecommunications systems.

Unlike Drexciya’s aquatic mythology, Japanese Telecom adopts a drier, more clinical aesthetic—laser-focused on circuitry and signal flow rather than oceanic worlds. The result is a uniquely melodic yet mechanical brand of electro that has influenced generations of electronic producers and remains essential listening for fans of Underground Resistance, Dopplereffekt, and the broader Clone and International DJ Gigolo catalogues.

Despite its brevity—just a handful of releases—the Japanese Telecom project has become a cult favourite, with original pressings highly sought after and reissues continuing to sell out.
