Kiefer

Kiefer (born Kiefer Shackelford) is a Los Angeles-based pianist, composer, and producer known for blending jazz improvisation with hip-hop beat production. Raised in San Diego in a musical household, Kiefer was trained in classical and jazz piano from a young age. He later studied jazz formally at UCLA, learning from renowned musicians including Kenny Burrell and Tamir Hendelman.

His sound is characterized by expressive Rhodes and acoustic piano lines layered over lo-fi drum patterns and ambient textures. Kiefer draws inspiration from jazz greats like Herbie Hancock and Ahmad Jamal, while also taking cues from beatmakers such as J Dilla and Madlib. His music maintains a strong emotional core, often evoking a sense of introspection and warmth.

Since debuting with Kickinit Alone in 2017, Kiefer has released several well-received projects, including Happysad, Bridges, Between Days, and It’s Ok, B U, all of which showcase his development as both a composer and beatmaker. He is signed to Stones Throw Records and has also contributed to works by Anderson .Paak, Drake, Kaytranada, and Mndsgn.

Kiefer’s live performances typically feature a trio format and emphasize dynamic interplay between piano, bass, and drums. His ability to merge the fluidity of jazz with the structure of modern beats has made him a standout voice in contemporary instrumental music.
