Ordo Sakhna

Ordo Sakhna is a traditional Kyrgyz ensemble based in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, renowned for its dedication to preserving and revitalizing the musical and cultural heritage of the Kyrgyz people. Formed in 1999 under the direction of filmmaker and ethnographer Shamil Djaparov, the group operates as an ethnographic theater, combining music, storytelling, and traditional performance arts in an immersive format.

Their work centers on authentic representations of Kyrgyz folk traditions, featuring epic poetry (dastans), ancient melodies (kuu), and ritual music performed with traditional instruments such as the komuz (three-stringed lute), kyiak (bowed instrument), choor and sybyzgy (flutes), and temir komuz (jaw harp). Performances are enhanced by the use of historical costumes and gestures that reflect the nomadic spirit and cultural identity of the Kyrgyz people.

Ordo Sakhna has released several recordings that document and share these rich traditions, while also collaborating across genres. One of their most notable projects includes a self-titled album with German producer Moritz von Oswald, which bridges traditional Kyrgyz instrumentation with modern electronic textures.

Celebrated for both their cultural authenticity and willingness to explore new artistic terrain, Ordo Sakhna has played a vital role in bringing Central Asian music to international audiences.
