Guilty Simpson

Guilty Simpson (Byron Simpson) is a Detroit-born underground hip-hop MC known for his raw delivery and authentic street-level storytelling. A former member of the elite underground crew Almighty Dreadnaughtz and protégé of producer Madlib, he signed with Stones Throw Records in the mid-2000s.

His debut album Ode to the Ghetto (2008) features production from legends like Madlib, J Dilla, Oh No, Konnie Ross, Denaun Porter, and Black Milk, showcasing his commanding voice over gritty, soulful beats. Tracks like “Ode to the Ghetto,” “Footwork,” and “Robbery” pair Simpson’s gravel-toned charm with unfiltered Detroit grit and lyrical intensity.

Guilty Simpson’s style bridges classic boombap and contemporary soul-infused rap. His vocal delivery is deeply textured and expressive, his flows deliberate, and his presence magnetic—even in sparse arrangements. He has collaborated with a wide range of producers and artists—most notably his single “Stress” produced by J Dilla—and earned comparisons to other Detroit heavyweights like Royce Da 5’9″ and Black Milk.

Known for his uncompromising lyrical authenticity and soulful street sensibility, Guilty Simpson remains a key figure in the lineage of Detroit underground rap and independent hip hop rooted in production artistry and raw expression.
