M500 & 3MB

M500 & 3MB is a collaboration between Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins (under his Model 500 alias, abbreviated here as M500) and Berlin-based trio 3MB—comprised of Moritz von Oswald, Thomas Fehlmann, and occasionally Basic Channel collaborator Mark Ernestus. This transatlantic alliance stands as one of the earliest and most important Detroit-Berlin techno exchanges, symbolizing the genre’s global reach and shared vision.

Their self-titled release, M500 & 3MB, issued in the early 1990s on Berlin’s Tresor label, is a deeply textured, rhythmic fusion of Detroit’s machine soul and Berlin’s minimalist sensibilities. The album features hypnotic synth work, classic drum programming, and abstract atmospheres, capturing a moment when techno was evolving beyond the dancefloor into a more cerebral and experimental space.

Tracks like “Jazz Is The Teacher” and “Bassmental” exemplify the fusion of funk, dub, and techno futurism that both scenes were known for. This project not only highlights the mutual respect between the artists involved but also helped solidify the foundational bridge between Detroit and Berlin’s techno legacies.

M500 & 3MB remains a landmark collaboration—forward-thinking, deeply rooted in electronic tradition, and influential in shaping the techno continuum across continents.
