Madlib

Madlib, born Otis Jackson Jr. in 1973 in Oxnard, California, is a visionary American producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist widely celebrated for his boundary-pushing contributions to hip hop and beyond. Raised in a musical family—his father a soul singer, his mother a pianist, and his uncle jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis—Madlib absorbed a wide spectrum of influences from an early age.

He emerged in the 1990s with the group Lootpack and gained attention for his raw, sample-heavy production style. His breakthrough came with a series of groundbreaking collaborations and solo projects that blurred the lines between hip hop, jazz, soul, and experimental music. Under the alias Quasimoto, he released The Unseen, a cult favorite characterized by its pitched-up vocals and surreal beats.

Madlib’s work with MF DOOM as Madvillain resulted in Madvillainy, considered one of the most influential underground hip hop albums of all time. He also teamed up with J Dilla as Jaylib for Champion Sound and with Freddie Gibbs on Piñata and Bandana, combining gritty lyricism with lush, psychedelic instrumentals.

Beyond hip hop, Madlib explored jazz with projects like Yesterdays New Quintet and released the acclaimed Shades of Blue remix album for Blue Note Records. His Beat Konducta series and Madlib Medicine Show highlighted his prolific output and crate-digging ethos.

In 2021, he released Sound Ancestors, an album arranged by Four Tet that showcases his ability to synthesize global influences into a cohesive, forward-thinking sound. Revered for his creativity and independence, Madlib remains one of the most original and respected figures in modern music.
