Model 500

Model 500 is the most iconic alias of Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins. Launched in 1985 following his early work with Cybotron, the Model 500 project marked a turning point in electronic music—defining the futuristic sound of Detroit techno and establishing Atkins’ Metroplex label as a hub for innovation.

The debut single, No UFO’s, is widely credited as one of the very first true techno records. Its stark machine rhythms, cosmic overtones, and stripped-down funk signaled a new era—melding the influence of Kraftwerk and Parliament-Funkadelic with a distinctly Detroit sense of urban futurism. Follow-up tracks like Night Drive, The Chase, and Sound of Stereo continued to build on this vision, characterized by rolling drum patterns, shimmering synths, and sci-fi-inspired themes.

Throughout the ’90s and beyond, Model 500 continued to evolve. The 1995 album Deep Space incorporated ambient layers and atmospheric nuance, while Mind and Body (1999) and Digital Solutions (2015) refined the project’s sound with new textures and modern production approaches.

In the 2000s, Model 500 transitioned into a live band, featuring Atkins alongside Mike Banks (Underground Resistance), DJ Skurge, and Mark Taylor. This incarnation brought the project’s legendary sound to stages worldwide, further cementing its influence.
