Rhythm & Sound related

Rhythm & Sound is a foundational project in electronic music, created by Berlin-based producers Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus in the mid-1990s as a spiritual successor to their earlier work under Basic Channel. Where Basic Channel emphasized stripped-down dub-inflected techno, Rhythm & Sound pushed fully into the realm of dub and reggae, blending sound system culture with minimalist production and sub-bass-heavy atmospheres.

The project is known for its warm, analog textures, slow tempos, and a spacious, meditative style rooted in Jamaican dub but filtered through Berlin’s electronic music sensibility. Many of the releases feature collaborations with iconic vocalists such as Cornel Campbell, Paul St. Hilaire (Tikiman), Love Joy, Jennifer Lara, and Jah Batta, among others—adding a soulful, conscious dimension to the instrumental framework.

Rhythm & Sound issued music on a series of minimalist 10″ and 12″ vinyl records—many with hand-stamped or unmarked labels—as well as on their own label Burial Mix, which focused on the vocal versions. Their self-titled compilation album Rhythm & Sound (2001) and the follow-up With the Artists (2003) became essential documents of their sound.

Known for precision, restraint, and depth, Rhythm & Sound’s influence reaches far beyond dub techno. Their work has been embraced by reggae selectors, techno DJs, ambient enthusiasts, and audiophiles alike, and stands as a high watermark for cross-cultural musical synthesis rooted in the power of minimalism and bass.
