Maurizio’s M‑Series is a Berlin-based sublabel of Basic Channel, founded and led by Moritz von Oswald, often in collaboration with Mark Ernestus. Active between 1992 and 1997, it released a series of seven influential 12″ EPs—”Ploy”, “Lyot”, “Domina”, “M‑4”, “M‑4.5”, “M‑5”, “M‑6”, and “M‑7″—that blended deep house, minimal techno, and dub techniques into hypnotic, spacious club tracks. The sound was characterized by stripped-back arrangements, echo-heavy atmospheres, and deep, rolling basslines, laying the groundwork for what became known as dub techno.
In 1997, these tracks were compiled and released on CD as M‑Series, initially as a limited metal box edition and later reissued in remastered form in 2003, including some extended and exclusive edits.
Maurizio’s output remains highly regarded for its timeless quality and influence on electronic music. Tracks like “Domina” and “Lyot” are still played and referenced by DJs and producers, valued for their meditative depth and functional minimalism. The M‑Series is a cornerstone of the Basic Channel legacy and a defining document of techno’s evolution in the 1990s.
