Moritz von Oswald Trio

Moritz von Oswald Trio is a live experimental project founded by Moritz von Oswald, one of the key architects of dub techno and minimalist electronic music. The trio explores the intersection of electronic synthesis, improvisation, and organic rhythm—drawing from jazz, techno, ambient, and African percussion traditions.

Initially formed with Vladislav Delay (Sasu Ripatti) and Max Loderbauer (of Sun Electric), the trio’s rotating lineup has also included Tony Allen (Afrobeat legend), Laurel Halo, Heinrich Köbberling, and Takumi Motokawa, depending on the period and context of performance. Each iteration of the trio has brought a unique dimension to its deep, exploratory sound—often merging live electronic processing with acoustic instruments and polyrhythmic interplay.

Moritz von Oswald brings to the group his legacy from foundational projects like Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound (R&S), where he pioneered a stark, dub-inflected approach to techno that has profoundly influenced global electronic music. The trio extends this legacy into a more fluid, ensemble-based form—focusing on improvisation and sonic texture over traditional dancefloor structure.

Their albums, including Vertical Ascent, Fetch, and Sounding Lines, are studies in space, repetition, and sonic tension. Live, the Moritz von Oswald Trio performs with a rare sense of restraint and depth, creating enveloping soundscapes that blur the boundaries between machine and musician.

This project exemplifies von Oswald’s ongoing commitment to breaking down barriers between genres and traditions—building on the legacy of Basic Channel and R&S while opening new frontiers in live electronic expression.
