Boom Bap

Boom bap is known for its hard-hitting drum patterns, gritty sampling, and raw, head-nodding rhythm. Emerging in the late 1980s and early 1990s, primarily on the East Coast of the United States, boom bap features punchy kicks (“boom”) and sharp snares (“bap”)—often created using classic samplers like the SP-1200 or MPC. The style is deeply rooted in jazz, soul, and funk sampling, with a strong emphasis on lyrical flow, storytelling, and wordplay. Boom bap remains a foundational sound in hip hop, celebrated for its timeless feel and uncompromising dedication to rhythm and lyricism.
