Talib Kweli

Talib Kweli is a Brooklyn-born rapper, lyricist, and activist known for his articulate, politically engaged lyricism and commitment to conscious hip hop. Rising to prominence in the late 1990s, he first gained acclaim as one half of the duo Black Star alongside Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey). Their 1998 album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star became a landmark release, blending socially aware themes with intricate wordplay and cementing both artists as voices of a new generation.

Kweli’s solo debut Quality (2002) featured the breakout track “Get By,” produced by Kanye West, and further established his reputation for blending sharp social commentary with accessible production. Subsequent albums like The Beautiful Struggle, Eardrum, and Gutter Rainbows expanded his lyrical range, addressing issues from systemic injustice to personal growth.

He is also known for long-running collaborations with producer Hi-Tek as Reflection Eternal, and with Madlib on the Liberation series, which showcase his versatility across different production styles. In addition to his music, Kweli founded Javotti Media to support emerging independent artists and has been an outspoken advocate for civil rights, using his platform to speak out against racial injustice and inequality.

Talib Kweli remains a vital force in hip hop, praised for his intellectual depth, integrity, and dedication to elevating discourse through music.
