Mad Mike

“Mad” Mike Banks is a Detroit-born techno visionary, best known as the co-founder of Underground Resistance—a fiercely independent label and collective that emerged in the late 1980s with a mission to challenge the music industry’s corporate control and to empower the Black community through sonic resistance. Working alongside key figures like Jeff Mills and Robert Hood, Banks helped shape the sound and politics of Detroit techno, blending radical self-determination with a strong Afro-futurist ethos.

Renowned for his anonymity and refusal to engage in celebrity culture, Banks often performed in shadows or behind a mask, allowing the music—and the message—to take center stage. He was instrumental in founding Submerge Distribution, giving local artists a platform to release and distribute music on their own terms. Throughout his career, Banks has upheld a strict anti-commercial stance, resisting licensing deals, rejecting interviews, and walking away from major label offers to preserve artistic integrity.

His most iconic recordings include high-impact tracks like “Sonic Destroyer,” “Waveform,” and the genre-bending “Hi-Tech Jazz,” released under the Galaxy 2 Galaxy moniker. These works fused jazz, funk, and techno into emotionally potent statements of resistance, while message-driven tracks such as “Message to the Majors” voiced direct challenges to industry exploitation. Banks’ output spans raw, militant techno to lush instrumental pieces, always underpinned by his political convictions.

As a live performer and composer, Banks has led acts such as Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Timeline, bringing UR’s vision to life through rich, multi-instrumental shows combining electronics with live keys, drums, and brass. His rare but powerful performances, often in politically symbolic locations, are revered for their emotional intensity and their defiant stance against the commodification of underground music.

Mad Mike Banks remains one of the most respected and uncompromising figures in modern music—a symbol of resistance whose influence has echoed far beyond Detroit. Through Underground Resistance, he has inspired generations of artists to reject compromise, build community-driven alternatives, and reclaim techno as a tool for change.
