King Pari’s debut LP There It Goes arrives in 2024 on Stones Throw, delivering a fresh take on Minneapolis funk through the lens of two longtime collaborators—Joe Paris Christensen and Cameron Kinghorn. Rooted in the Twin Cities bedroom-funk tradition and infused with Prince-era grooves, the duo relocate to Los Angeles but retain their Midwest DNA in everything they do. Across ten tracks, the album moves from laid-back mid-tempo jams like “Wait a Minute” and “Somethin’ Somethin’” to vivid, kinetic bursts like “Bag. Full. Of. Cash.” and the stomping “Better the Devil.” The production blends warm analog textures, falsetto vocals, dusty drum programming, and subtle psychedelic dub flourishes, achieving a refined yet unpolished sound.
Both members have ties to Minneapolis’s funk legacy—one was invited personally by Prince to play at Paisley Park—then went on to open for Kamasi Washington in their early career. There It Goes feels like a vibrant statement from artists deeply embedded in both the past and future of funk. Carefully sequenced and confidently executed, the album showcases emotional storytelling, musical chemistry, and a distinct retro-modern aesthetic that feels both nostalgic and forward-facing.
