Technicolor is a seminal 12″ single released in 1990 on Metroplex by Channel One, a short-lived alias of Juan Atkins. The project featured vocals by Doug Craig (cousin of Carl Craig) and marked a playful, futuristic take on the Detroit techno sound. Evolving from Atkins’ earlier work with Cybotron and influenced by Kraftwerk, the record blends syncopated drum programming with sleek synth lines and minimal yet propulsive grooves. The A-side contains the original mix, while the B-side offers a hypnotic extended remix. In a 2005 interview, Atkins described the track as “more fun than politically driven, just about the colors and combination spread from colors.” The name “Channel One” references broadcasting and media themes common in Atkins’ work. Though the alias was used only once, Technicolor has remained a cult classic, reissued multiple times by Metroplex and carefully remastered from the original tapes.
