Planet Pearl is the second full-length from Pearl & The Oysters, released on Stones Throw in late 2024. This concept album imagines the duo as extraterrestrial castaways stranded on Earth—alien observers capturing the strangeness and beauty of our world through a lens of melancholic wit. Influenced by their French-American background, their music blends lush indie pop melodies, dreamy jazz-pop textures, and synth-infused nostalgia, all threaded together with themes of estrangement, saudade, and introspective storytelling.
From the AOR-tinged “Big Time” (self-described as “depressed disco”) to the meditative “A Planet Upside Down” and the infectiously bittersweet “Triangular Girl,” the album evokes yacht rock, Brazilian rhythms, and cosmic space-pop fused in a wistful, cinematic atmosphere. The duo—Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack—bring years of jazz and musicology training into seamless collaboration with producers and guests like Alex Brettin, Teo Halm, and Brijean Murphy, resulting in richly layered arrangements that feel both polished and intimate. This record stands out for its narrative ambition, genre-spanning melodies, and emotional depth, offering listeners a multisensory journey grounded in imaginative artistry.
