Trace, released in October 2001, is among the most influential releases from Rhythm & Sound—the ambient dub-techno project of Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. It features two tracks: the smoky, nine-minute title cut “Trace,” a deep hypnotic groove suffused with echo and sub-bass, and the sixteen‑minute “Imprint,” a sprawling ambient dub journey built on drawn-out atmospheres and minimalistic tension. Together, they embody the duo’s shift away from club-focused techno toward introspective, Jamaican-influenced sound design.

The record is widely lauded for its mastery of space, negative sonic terrain, and immersive subtlety—often compared to the output of Jamaican dub legends fused with Berlin’s minimal techno rigour. First pressed on recycled brown-cardboard sleeves and later issued on marbled vinyl repressings, Trace continues to exemplify Rhythm & Sound’s visionary intersection of minimalism and emotion.
