The Unseen
Availability: In stock
The Unseen, released in 2000, is the groundbreaking debut album by Quasimoto — the high-pitched alter ego of producer and rapper Madlib. At a time when both Madlib and Stones Throw Records were virtually unknown outside of underground hip-hop DJ circles, the album quietly emerged as one of the new decade’s first sleeper hits.
Built from a haze of jazz samples, lo-fi textures, and surreal lyrics, The Unseen introduced listeners to a wholly original soundworld that blurred the lines between reality and imagination. Quasimoto’s identity was deliberately mysterious at the time — maybe he was Madlib, maybe he wasn’t, and maybe it was nobody’s business.
Madlib originally created Quasimoto just to rap over his own beats for fun while living in Oxnard and Santa Barbara in the 1990s. It was only after some persuasion from Peanut Butter Wolf that these private recordings were released to the public. The result is a cult classic that helped define the experimental direction of early 2000s underground hip-hop. Sleeve artwork by Jeff Jank.
