Ploy

“Ploy” is the seminal debut 12″ by Maurizio, released in 1992 as the first entry (M‑1) in the influential M‑Series. Crafted by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus (already known as Basic Channel), the record was pivotal in shaping the aesthetic where minimalist techno, dub echoes, and ambient textures meet in hypnotic symmetry. Side A opens with the authoritative “Ploy (Strategic Mix),” followed by the filtered dub interlude “Eleye” and the brief “Outerlude.” The AA side features the iconic “Ploy (UR Mix)”—a sprawling reinterpretation by Underground Resistance that amplifies groove and atmosphere.
The entire release is a masterclass in subtlety: sparse percussive elements, cavernous reverb, and abandoned funk traces reframed as trance-inducing sonic zones. The artwork by Abdul Haqq and mastering at Detroit’s National Sound Corporation further tie the Berlin‑Detroit techno axis together. Ploy continues to be cited as one of the most influential techno singles ever made.
